Students visit Safeway or a supermarket in order to learn how to plan meals and do grocery shopping while keeping a budget as well as nutrition in mind.

Objective: 1. Be able to plan for one balanced meal

2. Be able to expand to a weekly shopping list

3. Arithmetic equations: make tables of values, calculate the subtotals and totals

4. Pay attention to nutrition value

Common Cord Standards:

1. Students use reasoning about addition and multiplication to solve budget problems.

2. Write and interpret numerical expressions

What: 1. define what a balanced meal means, use California's "ChooseMyPlate.gov" guidelines

2. brainstorm for favorite dishes (entrees and desserts)

3. make a weekly shopping list

Why:

  • To learn how to make a balanced meal and know what ingredients constitute it

  • To be able to estimate the cost of ingredients

  • To be familiarized with budgeting of one meal

How:

  • Visiting a local grocery store to purchase ingredients

  • Complete the Grocery Shopping with a Budget Worksheet
