Students engage in activities that will enable them to understand commuting costs, comparing expenses from driving a car or taking public transportation.

Objective: be able to convert personal commuter routes into cost comparisons

Common Core Standards:

1. Students demonstrate an understanding of the conversion of a series of real numbers.

2. Using the numbers as the comparison test, they can determine whether to drive or take public transit

What: What kind of job do you expect to have and where will you live?

Why: commuting expenses can be a good basic example to formulate personal expense items and look for ways to reduce monthly fixed expenses

How: use the worksheet to calculate driving vs. taking public transportation. Once students are comfortable with making the comparison, same concepts can be applied to housing costs and purchasing essential items
