About the Project
The project is comprised of financial literacy lesson plans, which were incorporated into the mathematics curriculum for a high school that serves students with autism and executive functioning challenges. Common executive functioning challenges include ADHD and dyslexia. Also, the project includes building a mobile wooden cart for a student-run store as part of the curriculum.

The Springstone School, in the East Bay, is a school for students with learning disabilities or special needs who particularly do not have experience with handling their finances and making decisions. With these financial literacy lessons, students will be able to improve their understanding of finance issues, encouraging them to become independent from family support after receiving their high school diploma.

These financial literacy lessons serve all levels and all ages of students, from elementary school through high school level. However, there is definitely a heavier focus on high school students. These integrated lessons give practical experience in real-life situations in areas of personal finance and entrepreneurship.

In addition to creating the curriculum, I organized volunteers to build a mobile wheeled cart which serves as a student-run store, for example, a coffee cart. The cart simulates real-life retail business transactions for the students.
With this project, I am in the process of creating a long-lasting change in the community. My project inspires others to take action and provide support. As a Girl Scout, I personally am thankful for this opportunity to help others as well as discover myself. I was able to further explore my career interests in business, finance and psychology. Aside from that, I gained organization, communication, and leadership skills from planning lessons and reaching out to students and teachers. This project required creativity and problem-solving skills, which enable me to take on new impactful roles in the future. So thank you for all the support, from Girl Scouts and my mentors who have been there every step of the way. ~ Isabel Chao
